Samsung takes the lead with 20-nanometer NAND Flash chips

Posted by Rachel King Filed Under CES, Hot News, TOP REVIEWS with Comments Off

Samsung has something to be happy about this Monday morning. The Seoul-based company is the first in the world to produce 20-nanometer class, MLC NAND chips for SD cards and other memory solutions.

The 20-nm class NAND flash memory is 50% more productive and 30% faster than the 30-nm class series. With a speed-class rating of 10, the 20-nm series boasts a read speed of 20MB/s and writes at 10MB/s. Samsung also promises this set to be more secure and reliable than previous classes.

The technology is being incorporated into SD card samples for now and will be given a wider release later this year. Samsung is introducing the series with a 32GB capacity, with more densities to follow from 4GB to 64GB.

Samsung incorporating touchscreen display on NB30 netbook

Samsung is beefing up its NB30 netbook, hoping that the integration of a touchscreen display might make the 10-inch computer more enticing.

According to Notebook Italia, the newly-dubbed NB30 Touch will host a 10.1-inch, WSVGA LED touchscreen display with a 1024 x 600 resolution. But this new fancy feature will also cause a price jump, with a higher price tag set at €399 ($544), compared to the previous NB30 edition that cost €279 ($381).

Most of the other features remain the same, but here’s a glance at what else is included:

  • Windows 7 Starter Edition
  • Intel Atom N450 1.66GHz processor
  • 1GB of RAM
  • 160GB or 250GB hard drive
  • 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi
  • 10/100 Ethernet card
  • Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR
  • Webcam
  • 3-in-2 memory card reader
  • Three USB 2.0 ports
  • Six-cell lithium-ion battery
  • Weighs 2.78 pounds

While a touchscreen seems like a nice add-on, it makes this netbook considerably more expensive. And is a touchscreen on a netbook even that necessary?

Samsung i8910 Omnia HD can run 62 applications simultaneously

Posted by Rachel King Filed Under CES, Hot News, TOP REVIEWS with Comments Off

If running multiple applications at once on your smartphone is a priority for you, ditch the iPhone and pick up a Samsung i8910 Omnia HD, which has been proven able to run 62 mobile apps at once.

Thanks to a custom ROM developed by HyperX, users can beautifully operate over 60 applications on the Samsung i8910, with 5MB of RAM to spare. While most people probably won’t care to manage 62 apps at once - rather just maybe 1 to 5 at once - it’s still impressive nonetheless. However, this smartphone still can’t handle 3G in the US, so nothing is perfect.

Samsung Wave is world’s first DivX HD certified phone

Watching movies on your smartphone will be much more enjoyable - so long as you have a Samsung Wave S8500.

The mobile device, which debuted at MWC 2010 last month, has been certified as the first phone that supports DivX HD video playback at 720p resolution.

The Wave S8500 boasts a 3.3-inch AMOLED touchscreen display, and watching 720p-encoded videos will certainly be a good way to make use of all that.

I’d love to load up a smartphone with plenty of high-quality, crisp-looking movies to keep me entertained while traveling, but file sizes would probably be an issue. The Wave will ship with either 2 or 8GB of internal memory, so users might have to be picky depending on the length of the clip depending how much other content is already on the phone. But storage space can be bumped up thanks to a microSD expansion slot.

Samsung has also announced that they are working on getting DivX HD playback on the Android-powered Galaxy S eventually too.

The Wave has been priced at about €380 ($507), and will be released in Europe on May 17. No word on a North American release yet.
