HTC gets official with Android 2.2 roll out in Europe this weekend

Posted by Rachel King Filed Under CES, Hot News, TOP REVIEWS with Comments Off

HTC will be finally be rolling out Android 2.2 (Froyo) updates this weekend. Well, that is for owners of the HTC Desire in Europe.

As reported by Engadget, the weekend update will also include add-ons to the HTC Sense interface, such as 720p video capture, an improved multi-language keyboard, and the manufacturer’s signature App Share widget.

Only the HTC Desire will be getting the Froyo upgrade at first, and there’s a big catch: you have to have an unlocked device. “Operator-specific” variants will be available in the coming weeks, so if you are locked in with a carrier, you’re going to have to wait awhile. Bummer. Users will be notified with an over-the-air update and are recommended to download the package via Wi-Fi.

Spotted: Motorola Droid 2 cases at Best Buy

Even though the smartphone isn’t even out yet and rumors about early August release dates are still being tossed around, a case for the Motorola Droid 2 has already emerged!

The cases are already being spotted at Best Buy Mobile locations. However, neither the case nor the highly-awaited mobile device are actually on shelves just yet.

Given that we’re already seeing accessories, the Droid 2 (set to drop with Verizon Wireless) can’t be far behind as well. And we’ll probably be seeing that special Star Wars-edition soon too.

NetJets to install Aircell in-flight Wi-Fi service to business fleet

Posted by Rachel King Filed Under CES, Hot News, TOP REVIEWS with Comments Off

In-flight Wi-Fi is becoming a prerequisite on commercial flights, but it’s surprising that more business-focused fleets haven’t been getting the same treatment. NetJets is taking some initiative and bringing Wi-Fi to some of its airplanes soon.

NetJets currently boasts more than 800 aircraft in its arsenal, but only 250 of the planes with mid- to large-sized cabins will be getting outfitted with Wi-Fi first. The service will eventually be rolled out to the entire fleet. Installations are set to begin this month (presumably they’re still talking about July), but a finish date hasn’t been given.

Having Wi-Fi access seems necessary in this day and age for any businessperson, so it only seems natural that this feature be available on private aircraft. A long flight is the perfect time to get work done…or at least take a Hulu break.

Copia to launch $99 5-inch e-book reader this fall

Posted by Rachel King Filed Under CES, Hot News, TOP REVIEWS with Comments Off

Amazon might have lowered the price bar even further with the new version of the Kindle, but Copia is taking things further with a $99 e-book reader to launch this year.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the 5-inch Ocean Reader with a color touchscreen will be released this fall before the holiday season. Six- and nine-inch variants are expected to eventually launch with Wi-Fi and 3G support as well.

A big focus for Copia’s e-readers, which supports the ePub format, is social networking with direct feeds from Facebook and Twitter. Copia also describes itself as the “first social eReading experience.”

It’s refreshing to finally see e-book readers being marked with reasonable prices. But again, is it worth paying a hundred bucks or more for a device without multiple functions with the evolution of tablet computers? Yet, if all a particular consumer wants an e-reader for is actual reading, then a smaller and cheaper model like this one might have its place.

iPhone 4 drops in 17 more countries today

Posted by Rachel King Filed Under CES, Hot News, TOP REVIEWS with Comments Off

Apple continues its global roll out of the iPhone 4 today with the launch of the smartphone in 17 more countries. Any bets as to how many more units will sell this weekend?

Up until now, the iPhone 4 has only been available in the U.S., the U.K., France, Germany and Japan. Now, the lucky residents of the following 17 nations will have a chance to discover the smartphone’s infamous antenna problems for themselves:

  • Australia
  • Austria
  • Belgium
  • Canada
  • Denmark
  • Finland
  • Hong Kong
  • Ireland
  • Italy
  • Luxembourg
  • The Netherlands
  • Norway
  • New Zealand
  • Singapore
  • Spain
  • Sweden
  • Switzerland

That’s a pretty massive international release for a single day. Apple sold at least 1.7 million units during the opening launch weekend in June. While this weekend probably won’t beat that number, it’s sure to be a hit.

If you live in one of these faraway lands, you can purchase the iPhone 4 (in black, of course) online or in stores.

If you think your computer tower doesn’t look cool or intimidating enough, check out NZXT’s latest massive full tower chassis: the Phantom.

The Phantom enclosure can host up to seven hard drives and up to five 5.25-inch bays. Some design notes include rubber feet to reduce vibration, an LED lighting on/off control button, and ports up top for USB, eSATA and Audio/Mic connections.

For serious PC users that will probably cause this machine to heat up a bit, there are seven fan cooling options, an integrated fan controller, dual radiator support, and quad watercooling cutouts.

With the choice of three exterior shades (red, black and white), the Phantom chassis will be available in September for $139.99.
